Mike Cox's race report from Bangs Lake Tri
Written by Michael Cox
Thursday, 14 August 2008

This past Sunday I participated in the inaugural Bangs Lake Triathlon, Wauconda, IL.  The BLT is one of two local Tri's replacing the former lake Zurich Tri.  The other being the Lake County Triathlon that also happened to take place last Sunday.  It made for an interesting ride as the events share parts of the bike course.

The conditions were perfect, approximately 65 degrees at start with a finishing temperature around 75.  The event was well organized and they had The Dead playing all day.  Check in was easy and parking was available on-site.  The race started promptly at 6:30.

The swim is a point-point (my favorite) so a short bus ride is required.  The start is at a boat launch and requires navigating through the marina entrance.  The swim course is a diagonal across BL.  There was some complaining that it was not well marked and that the distance between buoys was to far.  The lake was clean and not too weedy.

The bike is a two loop course and, surprisingly, hilly (no downs all ups).  All the roads were open to traffic.  No aids stations on the course, which, for an Internationall, isn't a big deal unless you forgot to put water/Gatorade on your bike.

The run is also two loops with a few manageable rollers.  Again, all roads were open to traffic.  Plenty of aid stations stocked with water and Gatorade.

Entry fee was reasonable, the goodie bag decent (it included a Tri Back Pack similar to PP), and in keeping with the theme, a tie-dyed shirt.  The proximity makes it an easy event to attend and one worth considering next year.
