Red-winged blackbird - 2008/07/07 18:06 I know I have told a bunch of you that I have been attacked on the Robert McClory Trail, twice by the same red-winged blackbird. Luckily, I am able to just concentrate on riding and the bird hits the back of my helmet. These birds are ultra-aggressive. Unfortunately, this weekend (July 4th weekend), a man was riding on the "bunny trail" (I am not sure what that is) near the Highland Park Lexus dealer and was attacked by one. He lost control of his bike and fell, cracking open his head and eventually dying in the hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. Unfortunately, these birds are protected by the Bird Migration Treaty. Thus, if you hurt one, you are subject to two years in prison and a $250k fine. To me this is a crock. In my 31.5-mile commute to work, I see hundreds, probably close to 1000, of these birds. Time Magazine wrote an article about how aggressive they have become in Chicago.

Re:Red-winged blackbird - 2008/08/08 10:30 Just a follow up. I couldn't bike to work for two weeks. So, I got on my bike yesterday for the first time and started the ride in. Two weeks ago there were still literally 900-1000 red-winged blackbirds on my 31.5-mile commute. Yesterday there were none. Zero. Amazing how they can be so aggressive for six-eight weeks then just disappear.
