Thomas Lynch pled guilty to Attempt Aggravated Battery, a class A misdemeanor.  He was sentenced to 24 months probation, open mandate for any and all treatment recommended by probation (anger management), court costs, $25 per month probation service fees, obtain a substance abuse evaluation within 30 days, $3500 donation to the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, no drugs or alcohol, random urinalysis testing at a flat rate of $125, not travel on St. Mary’s Rd or Everett road, an apology letter sent to Illinois Bicyclists on behalf of XXX racing, and the probation may be transferred to Florida.

Lynch was orginially charged with a minor traffic violation.  Lake County State's Attorney Michael Wall heard about the incident.  After further investigation, the charge was changed to a felony.

Lynch passed a group of cyclists on St. Mary's Road.  Angered by the cyclists, he pulled in front of them and slammed on his brakes.  This caused a pile up of cyclists.  Lynch then pulled away with a cyclists still underneath his truck and the rear wheel rolled over the cyclist.

As disturbing as you may find those facts, you should be more disturbed by the comments posted on the news article at the Daily Herald.  It is obvious that there is huge animosity between cyclists and drivers.  As a cyclists please remember to do your part to always obey the rules of the road.  One of the most significant being that cyclists may only ride two-abreast when it is unlikely to impede the regular flow of traffic.  There are not many roads in Northern Illinois/Chicagoland where cyclists can think they will not impede traffic.  Thus, almost everywhere in the area would require cyclists to ride single file.  Also, you are not in the freakin Tour.  If there is a stop sign-- stop, especially when there is other traffic in the area. It should not matter that you are in the middle of a 2x20 interval and do not want to mess up your power reading.  That is no different than a motorist claiming he does not want to take the time to slow down to let traffic clear to get around you.
